Celebrating Seniors

Honoring the kuvasz and their owners that have reached milestone birthdays.

Foxhaven's Dore Marika, CGC (Dori)  born May 5, 1989.
Owned by Amy & Steve Elftmann

Happy birthday, dear Dori! Turning 14 on May 5, 2003 is the perfect time to share your accomplishments with the rest of the kuvasz community. I am privileged to share past and future adventures with you.

Dori is a sweet, gentle dog who is always ready to helps others, both human and canine. While living in Atlanta, Dori was featured on CNN-TV as she provided pet-facilitated therapy for children and the elderly. She helped with many foster dogs through the years.

Dori, along with her family members Kodi the Kuvasz and Sam the Beagle-Pekingese mix, helped host the KFA Fun Match  and sponsored shows weekend in Atlanta in October 1994. The following October, Dori  helped organize
Kuvasz-stock ‘95,
"24 hours of peace, love and Kuvaszok".

In her spare time, Dori attended dog camp in Vermont and visited with sled dogs in Minnesota when Steve and I went dog-sledding. She even did some agility training before it became a mainstream canine sport.

Dori retired to Florida in 1998 and continues to help with foster work, currently mentoring rescues for the local Great Pyrenees club. For fun, Dori now basks in the sun, sand and surf of Pinellas County's dog beaches. Dori reports her findings on Dog Parks in the Tampa Bay Area.

Ch. Ghosthill's Victor Laszlo, CGC (Laszlo) born July 8, 1991
Owned by Gail S. Dash & Neil Berger

Now retired after an active show and obedience career (2/3 of a CD, no less!).  Although no  longer actively at stud, Laszlo is the proud father of 24 Kuvasz children including new Champion, Casablanca’s Usual Suspect (Boomer).

Laz continues to run the ranch, a little slower and grumpier than when he was younger, but still feisty and loving to play his games.  His favorite game continues to be, grab stuff and wait to be bribed.  He has gone from stealing remote controls and chef’s knives (his particular favorites) to stealing whatever he can reach (shoes, newspapers, mail, stuff off Gail’s desk, Saran Wrap boxes, etc.) and has trained us well in giving him treats in exchange for the return of the purloined items.

He is well remembered in the Kuvasz community for lifting his leg on a former KCA President as he was given his medallion during the Parade of Champions. His other claim to fame is bolting out of the obedience ring at the first KCA Specialty and then proceeding to jump into and out of the next four adjacent rings until finally deciding he’d had enough fun and ran out the door of the livestock center. He was as usual unrepentant, and convinced yet again that he was the smartest Kuvasz in the world.

He is given his due respect from his sons and daughters Boomer, Ricky, Shana and Hõsi (Hershey); is henpecked and “dissed” by his consort Hali, and given no respect, no respect at all, by the little ingrates (his word) Maggie and Laney the Swede.

Laszlo is otherwise content and loved by all visitors, amazed at his friendliness, playfulness and affection at age 12.  He continues his work as Kuvasz ambassador extraordinaire, Mr. Meet The Breed.  Visitors love his act: the ultimate guard dog when they first approach, then after a proper introduction, bringing out his toys and making the visitors play.

He is healthy, in good coat, at normal weight and can still use his teeth effectively.  We love him and cherish the time we spend with him.

Laszlo died peacefully at home in Gail and Neil's arms on May 13, 2005
